How this converter works
The Bank of Canada publishes one daily average exchange rate for each supported currency, expressed as the value of one unit of the foreign currency in Canadian dollars — for example, how many Canadian dollars one US dollar is worth. We pull those rates live from the Bank’s public Valet API and do the arithmetic for you.
When you convert between two currencies that aren’t the Canadian dollar, we cross-rate through CAD. For instance, US dollars to euros is calculated as the USD/CAD rate divided by the EUR/CAD rate for the same day. That keeps every conversion anchored to a single official source.
Which rate should you use for taxes?
For converting foreign income or expenses on a Canadian tax return, the CRA generally accepts the Bank of Canada daily rate for the day the transaction occurred, or an average rate for the year for items that recur throughout the year. This tool gives you the exact daily figure the CRA references — pick the transaction date under “Specific date” and keep a screenshot or note for your records.

FAQ
Where do these exchange rates come from?
Directly from the Bank of Canada’s Valet API — the daily average rates the Bank publishes each business day by about 16:30 ET. They’re indicative rates, not a dealing rate.
Can I convert between two non-Canadian currencies?
Yes. Because the Bank of Canada quotes everything against CAD, we cross-rate through the Canadian dollar for pairs like USD→EUR or GBP→JPY.
Why is there no rate for the date I picked?
The Bank only publishes on business days. Pick a weekend or holiday and the converter automatically falls back to the most recent business day before it. Historical rates go back 12 months.
Is this the rate my bank will give me?
No. This is a neutral benchmark. Banks and card networks typically add a 2–4% markup plus fees, so your real rate will be worse. If you move money across borders often, a low-markup provider can save a lot — see our note in the sidebar.
